Rixathon is a biosimilar medicine, a copy of the innovator medicine Rituxan (MabThera in UK). Rixathon is an infusion medicine meaning that the active ingredient rituximab comes in a concentrated form that must be made into a solution which is given as a drip into your blood. Rixathon is used by adults for the treatment of certain blood cancers and inflammatory conditions. Rixathon is given on its own or along side of other medicines.
Rituximab is called a monoclonal antibody (protein) which attaches to CD20 proteins present in certain white blood cells. When rituximab attaches to the cell, the cell will die, which helps in both rheumatoid arthritis and certain cancers.
