Information about Sutent (Sunitinib)

Sutent is an oral medication containing sunitinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) that is used to treat various types of cancer. It works by blocking the growth of blood vessels that tumors need to grow (anti-angiogenesis) and by inhibiting certain proteins that contribute to cancer cell growth and survival. Sunitinib is mainly used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), and various other cancers.

Product Highlights

  • Sutent is used to treat advanced or metastatic RCC, a type of kidney cancer.
  • Sutent is used for GIST that cannot be surgically removed or has spread to other parts of the body, especially after other treatments have failed.
  • Sutent may be used for the treatment of advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors that are unresectable or metastatic.

Key Ingredient

  • Sunitinib

Key Benefits

  • Sunitinib works by blocking the signaling pathways that allow tumors to grow and spread.
  • By inhibiting angiogenesis, Sutent prevents the formation of new blood vessels that tumors need to survive and grow.
  • It is used to treat multiple cancer types, including kidney cancer, GIST, and pancreatic tumors.
  • Sutent is taken orally, making it more convenient compared to some intravenous cancer treatments.

Direction of Use

  • The usual dosage varies depending on the type of cancer being treated. For RCC, the usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily for 4 weeks, followed by a 2-week break. For GIST, the recommended dose is 50 mg taken once daily without any breaks.
  • Sutent should be taken once daily, with or without food. The capsules should be swallowed whole.
  • If you forget a dose, take it as soon as possible, unless it's almost time for your next dose. Avoid taking two doses to make up for the missed one.
  • Sutent is often used in cycles, such as 4 weeks on followed by 2 weeks off, depending on the type of cancer and doctor's recommendation.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects of Sutent include tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, high blood pressure, mouth sores, skin rashes, and reduced appetite.
  • More serious effects can include heart problems (e.g., congestive heart failure), liver problems, gastrointestinal perforation, and bleeding. It can also affect thyroid function, and regular monitoring of thyroid levels is recommended.
  • Sutent can cause high blood pressure (hypertension), which may require medication to control.
  • Liver enzyme levels should be monitored regularly as Sutent can cause liver damage.
  • There is an increased risk of bleeding, so any signs of unusual bleeding or bruising should be reported.
  • Sutent should not be used during pregnancy as it may harm the fetus. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding.

Avoid Sutent (Sunitinib) If

  • You have an allergy to sunitinib or any of the other ingredients in Sutent.
  • You have a history of severe liver disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Sutent can harm an unborn baby.
  • You are breastfeeding, as Sutent may pass into breast milk and affect the baby.
  • You have a history of heart conditions, particularly congestive heart failure or arrhythmias.
  • You have active bleeding or a history of gastrointestinal perforations (holes in the stomach or intestines).
  • You are taking certain medications that interact with Sutent, such as those that affect liver enzymes or blood clotting.
