Information about Tarceva (Erlotinib)

Tarceva is a prescription medication that contains erlotinib as its active ingredient. It is used in the treatment of specific types of cancer, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and pancreatic cancer. Tarceva works by blocking the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Product Highlights

  • Tarceva is used in the treatment of advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, especially for patients whose cancer has specific genetic mutations that make it sensitive to EGFR inhibitors.
  • Tarceva is used in combination with gemcitabine to treat advanced pancreatic cancer, particularly in patients who have not responded to other treatments.
  • In some cases, Tarceva may be used for off-label treatments of other cancers, but this is less common.

Key Ingredient

  • Erlotinib

Key Benefits

  • Tarceva specifically targets cancer cells with certain EGFR mutations, offering a more focused treatment approach compared to traditional chemotherapy.
  • For certain patients with non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancer, Tarceva can significantly improve survival rates and quality of life.
  • Tarceva is an oral medication, which makes it more convenient compared to intravenous treatments.
  • Tarceva has been shown to be effective when used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs, such as gemcitabine for pancreatic cancer.

Directions of Use

  • Dosage for NSCLC: The usual dose for NSCLC is 150 mg once daily, taken on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal).
  • Dosage for Pancreatic Cancer: The typical dose for pancreatic cancer is 100 mg once daily, taken on an empty stomach.
  • The tablets should be swallowed whole, without crushing or chewing, as this can affect the drug’s effectiveness.
  • Take Tarceva at the same time each day for consistency, and do not skip doses. Dosage: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's close to the time for your next dose.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects include skin rashes (particularly acne-like rashes), diarrhea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and nausea. These effects are usually manageable but should be reported to a healthcare provider if severe.
  • Serious reactions may include severe lung problems (e.g., interstitial lung disease), liver toxicity, gastrointestinal perforations, or eye problems such as dry eye or eye infections.
  • Regular liver function tests may be needed, as Tarceva can cause liver toxicity in some patients.
  • Tarceva can interact with certain medications, including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers, and antacids, which may affect its absorption. Make sure to let your doctor know about all the medications you are currently taking.
  • Smoking can reduce the effectiveness of Tarceva. Patients should avoid smoking or inform their healthcare provider if they smoke.

Avoid Tarceva (Erlotinib) If

  • If you have a known allergy to erlotinib or any of its ingredients, you should avoid taking Tarceva.
  • Patients with severe liver impairment should not use Tarceva, or should do so under close medical supervision and with adjusted dosing.
  • Tarceva should not be used during pregnancy, as it can harm the fetus. Women of childbearing age should use reliable contraception during treatment and for a period of time after stopping the medication.
  • If you have a history of interstitial lung disease (ILD) or severe lung problems, Tarceva may not be appropriate for you due to the risk of worsening lung function.
  • If you have a history of gastrointestinal perforations or serious gastrointestinal diseases, you should not use Tarceva.
