Information about Verzenio (abemaciclib)

Verzenio (Abemaciclib) is an oral medication used in the treatment of certain types of breast cancer. It is a targeted therapy that works by inhibiting cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6), which are proteins involved in cell division and growth. By blocking these proteins, Verzenio helps slow the growth of cancer cells. It is typically used in combination with other cancer treatments.

Product Highlights

  • Verzenio is primarily used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, particularly in women with advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
  • Used in combination with letrozole as a first-line treatment for HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
  • Often used in combination with fulvestrant for HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer after progression on endocrine therapy.
  • In certain cases, Verzenio can be used after surgery or radiation therapy to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.

Key Ingredient

  • Abemaciclib

Key Benefits

  • By inhibiting the CDK4/6 proteins, Verzenio helps slow the progression of HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer.
  • Clinical trials have shown that Verzenio can help extend progression-free survival in patients with advanced or metastatic breast cancer.
  • When used in combination with other treatments like endocrine therapy, Verzenio improves overall treatment effectiveness.
  • Verzenio is taken in the form of a tablet, offering convenience for patients who prefer not to undergo IV treatment.

Direction of Use

  • Verzenio is typically taken once or twice a day, with or without food.
  • The recommended starting dose for Verzenio is 150 mg twice daily, but your healthcare provider may adjust the dose depending on how you respond to the medication and how well you tolerate it.
  • It's important to take Verzenio consistently as prescribed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, and infections. Diarrhea can be severe, so it’s important to manage it with your healthcare provider’s guidance.
  • Abemaciclib can lower white blood cell counts, increasing the risk of infection. Frequent blood tests may be required to monitor your blood counts.
  • Abemaciclib can affect liver function, so liver enzymes should be monitored regularly during treatment.
  • Verzenio may prolong the QT interval (a measure of heart rhythm), which could increase the risk of irregular heartbeats. Your healthcare provider may monitor your heart during treatment.
  • It can also cause fatigue and low blood counts, requiring close monitoring.

Avoid Verzenio (Abemaciclib) If

  • If you have a known allergy to abemaciclib or any of the ingredients in Verzenio, you should avoid using it.
  • If you have severe liver problems, Verzenio may not be suitable for you or requires dose adjustments.
  • Verzenio is not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm a developing fetus. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding, as it is unclear whether the drug passes into breast milk.
  • If you have a low white blood cell count or a history of severe bone marrow suppression, Verzenio may not be appropriate for you.
