Information about Revatio (Sildenafil)

Revatio is a prescription medication that contains sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Sildenafil works by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs and improving blood flow, making it an effective treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It is also used to improve exercise capacity and reduce symptoms associated with PAH. While sildenafil is more commonly known for its use in treating erectile dysfunction under the brand name Viagra, Revatio is specifically formulated for pulmonary conditions.

Product Highlights

  • Revatio is used to treat PAH, a condition that causes high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. It helps lower blood pressure and improve symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue.
  • In patients with PAH, Revatio improves exercise tolerance and reduces the severity of related symptoms.

Key Ingredient

  • Sildenafil

Key Benefits

  • Sildenafil helps lower blood pressure in the lungs, easing the burden on the heart and reducing the symptoms of PAH.
  • By improving blood flow, Revatio allows patients to engage in physical activities more comfortably and for longer periods.
  • Helps alleviate shortness of breath, fatigue, and other symptoms related to pulmonary arterial hypertension.
  • Revatio is available as an oral tablet, making it a convenient treatment for PAH compared to other forms of therapy.

Direction of Use

  • Revatio should be taken as prescribed, usually 3 times a day, with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  • If prescribed the oral formulation, follow the prescribed dosage based on your healthcare provider's recommendation.
  • This is typically administered in a clinical setting under the supervision of a healthcare provider.
  • For optimal results, take Revatio consistently at the same times each day to maintain stable levels in your body.

Safety Concerns

  • Sildenafil can cause a significant drop in blood pressure, particularly in patients taking certain other medications (e.g., nitrates).
  • Patients with heart problems, such as severe coronary artery disease or heart failure, should be monitored closely when taking Revatio.
  • Some patients may experience vision problems, including sensitivity to light or blurred vision. Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes has been reported in rare cases.
  • Sildenafil may interact with certain medications, such as nitrates (used for chest pain), alpha-blockers (used for high blood pressure), and some antifungal or antibiotic drugs.
  • A prolonged and painful erection can occur, although it is more commonly associated with the erectile dysfunction use of sildenafil (Viagra). This is a medical emergency.

Avoid Revatio (Sildenafil) If

  • You are allergic to sildenafil or any of the components in the medication.
  • You are currently taking nitrate medications (for chest pain or heart problems), as combining these with sildenafil can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
  • You have severe liver or kidney problems that have not been monitored by a doctor.
  • You have a history of severe heart or blood vessel problems, such as recent heart attack, stroke, or low blood pressure.
  • You have a history of vision problems (e.g., retinitis pigmentosa or sudden vision loss in one or both eyes).
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless advised otherwise by a doctor.
