Information about Symdeko (Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor)

Symdeko is a combination medication containing two active ingredients: Tezacaftor and Ivacaftor. This medication is used to treat cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disorder that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and other organs. Symdeko helps to improve the function of the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) protein, which is defective in individuals with cystic fibrosis. By targeting and improving CFTR protein function, it helps to reduce the symptoms of CF, such as difficulty breathing and lung infections.

Product Highlights

  • Symdeko is prescribed to treat cystic fibrosis in patients with specific mutations in the CFTR gene, including F508del and other eligible mutations. It is used to improve lung function and reduce pulmonary exacerbations in people with CF.

Key Ingredients

  • Tezacaftor
  • Ivacaftor

Key Benefits

  • Symdeko can help improve lung function by enhancing the activity of the CFTR protein, which helps to reduce symptoms like shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.
  • It helps to reduce the number of flare-ups or worsening of symptoms related to cystic fibrosis, thus improving overall respiratory health.
  • By improving respiratory function, Symdeko may help improve the quality of life for people living with cystic fibrosis, allowing them to engage in more activities and experience fewer hospitalizations.
  • Symdeko is specifically designed for individuals with certain mutations in the CFTR gene, allowing for more personalized treatment of cystic fibrosis.

Direction of Use

  • Symdeko should be taken orally as tablets.
  • The usual dose for adults and pediatric patients (12 years and older) is one tablet of 100 mg Tezacaftor/150 mg Ivacaftor in the morning and one tablet of 150 mg Tezacaftor/150 mg Ivacaftor in the evening.
  • It is recommended to take Symdeko with a fat-containing meal, as this can help with the absorption of the medication.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible, unless it's almost time for your next dose. In this case, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule should be followed.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects of Symdeko include headache, sore throat, nasal congestion or runny nose, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
  • Rare but serious side effects may include liver problems (indicated by yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine), eye problems (cataracts), and increased risk of respiratory infections.
  • Symdeko can impact liver function, so liver function tests should be conducted regularly, especially in individuals with a history of liver disease.
  • Symdeko can interact with certain medications, including those that affect liver enzymes (CYP3A inhibitors or inducers), so it is important to inform the doctor of all current medications.
  • While the medication helps improve lung function, it may lead to an increased risk of respiratory infections, which need to be monitored closely.

Avoid Symdeko (Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor) If

  • If you are allergic to Tezacaftor, Ivacaftor, or any other component of Symdeko, you should avoid using this medication.
  • Symdeko should be avoided if you have severe liver disease or impaired liver function, as it may exacerbate liver problems.
  • It is not well-established whether Symdeko is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The medication should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks, and it is recommended to discuss with a healthcare provider before use.
  • Avoid using Symdeko with medications that strongly affect the CYP3A enzyme system (either as inhibitors or inducers), as this can alter the effectiveness and safety of the treatment.
  • Symdeko is generally not recommended for children under 12 years old, as its safety and efficacy have not been established in this age group.
