Information about Strattera (Atomoxetine)

Strattera (Atomoxetine) is a prescription medication primarily used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in both children and adults. Unlike stimulant medications typically used for ADHD, Strattera is a non-stimulant option that works by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in attention and impulse control. It is considered a first-line treatment for ADHD, especially for patients who may not respond well to stimulants or who have a history of substance misuse.

Product Highlights

  • It is used to treat ADHD in both children and adults to improve symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
  • Strattera may also be used off-label to treat other conditions such as depression or anxiety, particularly when other medications are ineffective or not tolerated.

Key Ingredient

  • Atomoxetine

Key Benefits

  • Strattera offers an alternative for individuals who cannot tolerate stimulants or are at risk of substance misuse.
  • It helps enhance focus, attention, and impulse control in patients with ADHD.
  • Strattera helps reduce hyperactive behaviors and impulsivity associated with ADHD.
  • Since it is not a stimulant, Strattera has a lower risk of abuse or dependency, making it a suitable option for individuals with a history of substance use disorders.

Direction of Use

  • Strattera is taken orally, typically once or twice a day, and can be taken with or without food.
  • The starting dose is typically 0.5 mg per kg of body weight, which is gradually increased to the effective dose of 1.2 mg per kg of body weight per day.
  • For optimal results, Strattera should be taken consistently at the same time every day.
  • If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, unless it's almost time for the next dose. It should not be doubled.

Safety Concerns

  • Atomoxetine may elevate the risk of suicidal thoughts, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults. It is crucial to monitor for any signs of depression or suicidal behavior during treatment.
  • Strattera may increase heart rate and blood pressure. It should be used with caution in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.
  • Liver toxicity has been reported in rare cases. Liver function should be monitored during treatment.
  • Some patients may experience increased irritability, aggression, or mood swings.
  • In children, Strattera may cause a slight reduction in growth rates, particularly in height and weight.

Avoid Strattera (Atomoxetine) If

  • Strattera should be avoided in individuals with a known allergy to Atomoxetine or any of its components.
  • Strattera should not be taken if the patient has used an MAOI in the last 14 days, as this can cause a serious interaction.
  • Individuals with heart conditions such as arrhythmias, high blood pressure, or a history of heart attack should avoid Strattera or use it with caution.
  • Patients with severe liver problems should avoid Strattera or take it under strict medical supervision.
  • Strattera should not be used in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, as it may increase intraocular pressure.
  • Strattera should be used with caution in patients with a history of severe mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder or psychosis.
