Information about Wegovy (Semaglutide)

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription medication primarily used for weight management in individuals who are overweight or obese. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which works by mimicking a natural hormone that helps control appetite and food intake. Semaglutide is administered via subcutaneous injection and is part of a comprehensive weight-loss program that includes diet and exercise.

Product Highlights

  • For adults with obesity (BMI ≥30) or overweight (BMI ≥27) with at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia.
  • It may be used off-label for individuals with type 2 diabetes to help regulate blood sugar, although it is primarily approved for weight management.

Key Ingredient

  • Semaglutide

Key Benefits

  • Studies have shown that Wegovy can significantly help reduce body weight when combined with a balanced diet and regular physical activity.
  • Semaglutide works by reducing hunger and increasing feelings of fullness, helping individuals consume fewer calories.
  • In addition to weight loss, Wegovy can improve various metabolic markers, such as blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
  • Once-weekly subcutaneous injection makes it easier for patients to adhere to the treatment plan.

Direction of Use

  • Wegovy is typically started at a low dose (0.25 mg weekly) and gradually increased to a target dose of 2.4 mg weekly, depending on the patient's tolerance and doctor’s guidance.
  • It is injected subcutaneously (under the skin) in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm once a week.
  • It should be taken on the same day each week, at any time, with or without food. However, if a dose is missed, it can be administered as soon as remembered, provided there are at least two days before the next scheduled dose.

Safety Concerns

  • The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These effects often lessen over time as the body becomes accustomed to the medication.
  • There is a potential risk of pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. Patients should report any persistent abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Animal studies have shown that semaglutide may be associated with an increased risk of thyroid tumors. Although this has not been confirmed in humans, it should be used cautiously in patients with a family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
  • Dehydration from gastrointestinal side effects can lead to kidney problems in some patients, so it's important to stay hydrated.

Avoid Wegovy (Semaglutide) If

  • You have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, as semaglutide may increase the risk of thyroid tumors.
  • You have a history of severe gastrointestinal disease, such as gastroparesis, as Wegovy can slow gastric emptying.
  • You have severe kidney disease or end-stage renal disease, as kidney function could be affected, especially with dehydration.
  • You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as the safety of Wegovy during pregnancy has not been established.
  • You are breastfeeding, as it is unknown whether semaglutide is excreted in breast milk.
