Information about Viibryd (Vilazodone)

Viibryd is a prescription medication that contains Vilazodone as its active ingredient. It is classified as an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) and a 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist. It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in the brain, which helps improve mood and reduce anxiety. Viibryd is primarily used to manage major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.

Product Highlights

  • To alleviate the symptoms of major depressive disorder in adults. This includes feelings of sadness, hopelessness, lack of energy, and other related symptoms.
  • It is generally used for individuals who have not responded well to other antidepressants or who experience intolerable side effects from other treatments.

Key Ingredient

  • Vilazodone

Key Benefits

  • Vilazodone is effective in reducing the symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), helping improve mood and daily functioning.
  • Compared to some other antidepressants, Viibryd may cause fewer sexual side effects like reduced libido or difficulty achieving orgasm.
  • Viibryd is less likely to cause sedation or drowsiness compared to some other antidepressants, making it suitable for people who need to remain alert during the day.
  • With its SSRI properties and partial agonist activity at the 5-HT1A receptor, Viibryd may offer additional benefits in treating depression and anxiety compared to SSRIs alone.

Direction of Use

  • Viibryd is typically started at 10 mg per day for the first week and then increased to 20 mg or 40 mg based on the response and tolerance to the medication.
  • It should be taken once a day with food to improve absorption and reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
  • The dosage may be gradually increased by the prescribing doctor to reduce the risk of side effects and ensure the medication is effective.
  • It is important to take Viibryd at the same time every day to help maintain consistent levels of the medication in the body.

Safety Concerns

  • A serious condition that can result from too much serotonin in the brain. Symptoms include agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, sweating, shaking, muscle spams, and incoordination. Urgent medical attention is necessary if serotonin syndrome is suspected.
  • Like other antidepressants, Viibryd can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior, especially in young adults under 25. Close monitoring is required, particularly during the first few months of treatment.
  • Stopping Viibryd suddenly may cause withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, irritability, or flu-like symptoms. It is important to taper the dose gradually under a healthcare provider’s supervision.
  • Some people may experience nausea, diarrhea, or dyspepsia (upset stomach). Taking Viibryd with food can help reduce these effects.
  • Viibryd can interact with other medications, including other antidepressants, medications that affect serotonin, and those that affect liver enzymes. Always inform your healthcare provider about other medications you're taking.
