Information about Vumerity (Diroximel)

Vumerity is an oral medication that contains diroximel fumarate, which is used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system. Diroximel fumarate is part of a class of drugs known as disease-modifying therapies (DMTs). It works by reducing inflammation and protecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, helping to slow down the progression of MS and reduce the frequency of relapses.

Product Highlights

  • Vumerity is used to treat relapsing forms of MS, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), and active secondary progressive MS
  • These forms of MS are characterized by flare-ups or relapses of neurological symptoms followed by periods of recovery.

Key Ingredient

  • Diroximel Fumarate

Key Benefits

  • Vumerity has been shown to reduce the frequency of relapses in patients with relapsing forms of MS, helping to prevent further neurological disability.
  • By activating the Nrf2 pathway, Vumerity helps protect neurons and other cells in the central nervous system from oxidative damage, which is a key contributor to MS progression.
  • Compared to other fumarate-based MS treatments, Vumerity tends to cause fewer gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea and abdominal discomfort.
  • Vumerity is taken as an oral capsule, typically twice daily, making it easy for patients to incorporate into their daily routine.

Direction of Use

  • The usual starting dose of Vumerity is 120 mg twice daily for the first 7 days, followed by a maintenance dose of 240 mg twice daily.
  • Take the capsules by mouth with or without food. It is important to swallow the capsules whole and avoid crushing or chewing them.
  • Take Vumerity at the same time each day to help establish a routine and improve adherence to the treatment.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects may include nausea, flushing, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. However, these side effects are generally less severe than those seen with other similar medications.
  • Vumerity may affect liver function. Liver enzyme levels should be monitored regularly during treatment, especially in the first few months.
  • Treatment with Vumerity may cause a reduction in the number of white blood cells, increasing the risk of infections. Regular blood tests to monitor blood cell counts are recommended.
  • Although rare, the use of Vumerity may be associated with an increased risk of PML, a serious viral infection of the brain that can occur in immunocompromised patients.
  • Allergic reactions, including skin rashes and itching, may occur. If any signs of an allergic reaction appear, such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or skin changes, contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Avoid Vumerity (Diroximel) If

  • You are allergic to diroximel fumarate or any of the ingredients in Vumerity.
  • You have severe liver problems, as Vumerity may worsen liver function.
  • You have a history of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), or you are immunocompromised.
  • You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as the safety of Vumerity during pregnancy has not been established. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should discuss alternative treatment options with their doctor.
  • You are breastfeeding, as it is not known if diroximel fumarate passes into breast milk.
  • You have severe active infections, as Vumerity may lower white blood cell counts, increasing susceptibility to infections.
