Direction of Use
Take ferrous sulfate as prescribed, usually one to three times daily.

Discharge Dosing for <2500g
If the patient is already on iron, prescribe 3 mg/kg/day based on their current weight. If iron has not been initiated before discharge, use the growth chart to estimate the weight range at 4 weeks and prescribe accordingly:

Safety Concerns
Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
Potential for iron toxicity, especially in children; overdose can be life-threatening.
Regular blood tests may be needed to monitor iron levels and hemoglobin.
Avoid Ferrous Sulfate If
You have a known hypersensitivity to ferrous sulfate or other iron supplements.
You have hemochromatosis or other iron overload disorders.
You are taking other iron supplements or medications that may interact with iron.
You have active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer disease.
