Direction of Use

  • Take ferrous sulfate as prescribed, usually one to three times daily.

Discharge Dosing for <2500g

If the patient is already on iron, prescribe 3 mg/kg/day based on their current weight. If iron has not been initiated before discharge, use the growth chart to estimate the weight range at 4 weeks and prescribe accordingly:

Safety Concerns

  • Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
  • Potential for iron toxicity, especially in children; overdose can be life-threatening.
  • Regular blood tests may be needed to monitor iron levels and hemoglobin.

Avoid Ferrous Sulfate If

  • You have a known hypersensitivity to ferrous sulfate or other iron supplements.
  • You have hemochromatosis or other iron overload disorders.
  • You are taking other iron supplements or medications that may interact with iron.
  • You have active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer disease.
