Information about Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

Mounjaro is a prescription medication that contains tirzepatide as its active ingredient. It is a novel, once-weekly injectable medication designed for the management of type 2 diabetes and weight management. Tirzepatide works by targeting two hormones, GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide), to help regulate blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and support weight loss.

Product Highlights

  • Mounjaro is indicated for improving blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, along with diet and exercise.
  • Mounjaro has been shown to promote significant weight loss in patients with obesity or overweight, particularly when used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise.
  • Note: It is important to check with a healthcare provider for specific treatment regimens and potential off-label uses.

Key Ingredient

  • Tirzepatide

Key Benefits

  • Mounjaro helps lower blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin secretion in response to meals and reducing glucagon release, which helps prevent excess glucose production by the liver.
  • Many patients experience substantial weight loss as Mounjaro helps reduce appetite and slow gastric emptying, leading to a feeling of fullness with smaller amounts of food.
  • The medication is taken once a week, making it easier for patients to stick to their treatment regimen compared to daily medications.
  • Although primarily for diabetes and weight management, tirzepatide may also offer benefits related to cardiovascular health due to its effects on reducing certain risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol levels (though more research is ongoing).

Direction of Use

  • Mounjaro is administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week. The typical starting dose is 2.5 mg, which may be gradually increased based on the patient's response and tolerability. The maximum dose can go up to 15 mg per week.
  • It should be injected into the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. The injection site should be rotated weekly to avoid skin irritation. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.
  • The medication should be stored in the refrigerator before use and can be kept at room temperature for up to 21 days after being taken out of the refrigerator.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion. These side effects are generally mild and tend to improve over time.
  • There is a potential risk of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) with Mounjaro, so any unusual stomach pain should be reported to a healthcare provider.
  • Mounjaro may affect kidney function, so patients with existing kidney disease should be closely monitored.
  • When used with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, there may be an increased risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
  • There is a potential risk of thyroid tumors in animal studies. While the risk in humans is not clear, Mounjaro is contraindicated in patients with a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • Due to its gastrointestinal side effects, Mounjaro can lead to dehydration, so it’s important to maintain adequate fluid intake.

Avoid Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) If

  • If you have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients, you should not use Mounjaro.
  • Mounjaro is contraindicated in individuals with a history of MTC or those with a family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) due to the potential risk of thyroid tumors.
  • If you have a history of gastrointestinal diseases like gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying) or severe constipation, Mounjaro may not be suitable due to its effects on gastrointestinal motility.
  • Those with severe kidney problems may need alternative treatments, as Mounjaro can impact kidney function and may require dose adjustments.
  • The safety of Mounjaro during pregnancy has not been established, so it is typically avoided during pregnancy unless deemed necessary by a healthcare provider.
