Information about Novolog FlexTouch pens (Insulin Aspart)

Novolog FlexTouch Pens are prefilled, disposable insulin pens containing insulin aspart, a rapid-acting insulin analog. Designed for the management of diabetes, Novolog FlexTouch pens provide a convenient, easy-to-use method of administering insulin, helping individuals achieve better blood sugar control, particularly after meals. These pens are compatible with a wide range of patients, including those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Product Highlights

  • Novolog FlexTouch is used to control blood sugar in people with type 1 diabetes, where the body does not produce its own insulin.
  • It is used for people with type 2 diabetes who are not adequately controlled with oral medications alone, providing fast-acting insulin for meal-related blood sugar spikes.
  • As a rapid-acting insulin, it helps to control the rise in blood glucose levels that occurs after meals.
  • Often used as part of a basal-bolus insulin regimen when combined with long-acting insulins for overall blood sugar control.

Key Ingredient

  • Insulin Aspart

Key Benefits

  • Novolog FlexTouch pens deliver insulin aspart, which begins to act quickly, reducing blood sugar levels after meals and preventing postprandial (after-meal) glucose spikes.
  • The prefilled, disposable pens are easy to carry and use, making them ideal for people with active lifestyles or those who travel frequently.
  • The dial system allows for precise adjustments to insulin doses, making it easier to manage blood glucose levels with minimal effort.
  • With a simple, user-friendly design, Novolog FlexTouch helps promote consistent and correct insulin use, improving overall diabetes management.
  • The pen delivers insulin through a fine needle, making injections more comfortable and less intimidating for users.
  • The pen is suitable for both children and adults, offering flexibility in dose adjustment based on individual needs.

Directions for Use

  • Remove the pen cap, attach a compatible needle, and prime the pen by dialing 2 units and pressing the button to remove air bubbles from the needle.
  • Choose a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection site such as the abdomen, upper arms, or thighs. Rotate injection sites to avoid skin irritation.
  • Turn the dose selector to the correct dosage, as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle into the skin, then press the injection button to administer the insulin. Hold the button down for 10 seconds to ensure the full dose is delivered.
  • After use, remove the needle, recap the pen, and dispose of the needle in a sharps container.
  • Keep unused pens refrigerated (2°C to 8°C). Once in use, the pen can be stored at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days. Do not freeze.

Safety Concerns

  • The most common side effect of insulin aspart is hypoglycemia. Symptoms of low blood sugar may include shakiness, sweating, confusion, dizziness, and hunger. Always have a fast-acting source of sugar, like glucose tablets or juice, on hand to quickly raise blood sugar levels.
  • If you miss a dose or take too little insulin, hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) may occur. Symptoms may include excessive thirst, frequent urination, tiredness, and blurred vision.
  • Reactions such as redness, swelling, or itching may occur at the injection site. Rotate injection sites regularly to minimize these issues.
  • Repeated injections in the same area can cause lipohypertrophy (fat buildup) or lipoatrophy (loss of fat). Change injection sites regularly to prevent skin irritation.
  • Rarely, people may experience allergic reactions to insulin aspart, which could include rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If these symptoms occur, seek prompt medical attention.
  • Insulin therapy may contribute to weight gain in some individuals, particularly if blood glucose is not well controlled.

Avoid Novolog FlexTouch Pens (Insulin Aspart) If

  • You are allergic to insulin aspart or any other component of Novolog FlexTouch.
  • You have hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or a history of severe low blood sugar reactions.
  • You have diabetic ketoacidosis or other serious complications of diabetes that require immediate medical attention.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding (consult your healthcare provider before using Novolog, as insulin needs may change during pregnancy).
  • You are under stress, ill, or have an infection: These conditions can affect insulin needs and blood sugar levels.
  • You are taking certain medications (such as beta-blockers, diuretics, or corticosteroids) that could interact with insulin and affect blood sugar control.
