Prescription Avonex contains Interferon beta 1a available as a prefilled pen or a vial in packs of 4 x 30mcg. Avonex pens and vials are used by adults in the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis, including relapsing remitting disease, isolated syndrome and active secondary progressive disease.

In studies of Avonex users, 78% had no increase in physical disability, 32% had reduction in relapse, 44% were less likely to have a relapse at 3 years and there was a 75% reduction in active brain lesions.

The standard Avonex dose is one injection once per week on the same day each week. The Avonex pen is the preferred device as 9 in 10 prefer Avonex pen over the prefilled syringe. The Avonex pen is a single use autoinjector that allows you to deliver the dose simply with one click. The box includes everything you need to self-inject. Follow the instructions in the package very carefully and have your doctor or nurse train you how to inject Avonex before you try on your own.

Avonex is shipped in a refrigerated container and must be kept in refrigerated conditions until ready to use. Allow Avonex at least 30 minutes to come to room temperature before you inject. Keep Avonex away from light. You may travel with or store Avonex for up to one week at room temperature.

Avonex is not for children below 12 years of age. Your doctor will prescribe Avonex for a length of time specific to your condition. Continue to use Avonex even if you feel well and do not stop using Avonex unless the physician has so instructed.
