Prescription Extavia contains Interferon beta 1b for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Interferon beta 1b is a type of protein that helps fight against immune system attacks such as those from viral sources.

Extavia is taken by patients at a high risk of developing multiple sclerosis after having first time symptoms. Extavia is used to treat relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis with at least 2 relapses in 2 years. Extavia is also used to treat secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (active with relapses).

Extavia is used by adults and children over 12 years of age.

Extavia is an injection which needs to be prepared from a vial powder and prefilled solvent syringe. Extavia can be injected by your healthcare professional and often by yourself after proper training. Follow the directions in the package insert carefully.

The Extavia dose is usually one injection under the skin every other day. Each pack of 15 vials Extavia is meant to be a monthly supply. Your initial dose at first time of treatment will be less than a full dose however you will be upwardly transitioned to the full dose.

Extavia is stored at room temperature only. If you prepare a dose of Extavia, it can keep for only 3 hours but must be kept at refrigerated if prepared early. Each pack of Extavia has an expiration date which must be used before the last day of that month of expiry.

Extavia is the same medical product as Betaseron (called Betaferon in the UK) with the same exact ingredients and the same standards and production method.
