Praluent (Alirocumab)

Prescription Praluent contains alirocumab in a prefilled pen device.  Praluent is used in adult patients with cardiovascular disease to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and unstable angina (chest pain) requiring hospitalization.  Praluent works by blocking protein PCSK9 which contributes to high levels of bad cholesterol. Praluent also helps your liver clear the bad cholesterol from your blood.

Praluent is used along with a good diet and can be taken along with other cholesterol or angina medicines. 

Praluent is a proven medicine, which has been shown in studies to reduce risk of heart attack by 14%, stroke by 27%, and unstable angina requiring hospitalization by 39%.

Praluent is not a statin drug, but can reduce bad cholesterol by approximately 50%. Praluent can be used with statin drugs for its added effect.

Praluent is injected either ever 2 or 4 weeks depending on the dose required.  Praluent is available at 75mg and 150mg strengths for use at home for self injection.  Approximatlely 90% of users find the Praluent pen convenient and are confident in administering it themselves.  

Praluent is to be stored in the refrigerator until it is ready to use.  Allow 30 to 40 minutes for the pen to reach room temperature and Praluent will be ready for injection. You may keep Praluent at room temperature for a maximum of 30 days, protected from light before it is used.  After 30 days at room temperature, you must throw out the medicine.
