Tekturna is called Rasilez in Europe.
Information about Tekturna (Aliskiren)
Tekturna is the brand name for aliskiren, a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Aliskiren is a direct renin inhibitor that works by blocking the activity of renin, an enzyme involved in the regulation of blood pressure. By inhibiting renin, Tekturna reduces the production of angiotensin I and II, hormones that constrict blood vessels and increase blood pressure. Tekturna is generally prescribed when other antihypertensive treatments are not sufficient or appropriate.
Product Highlights
- Tekturna is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6 years and older.
- Tekturna may be used in patients with chronic kidney disease or diabetic nephropathy who also have hypertension. However, it is important to monitor kidney function regularly during treatment.
Key Ingredient
Key Benefits
- Tekturna lowers blood pressure by inhibiting renin and reducing the production of angiotensin II, leading to the relaxation of blood vessels.
- The convenience of once-daily dosing can improve patient adherence to treatment.
- Unlike many other antihypertensive agents, Tekturna does not act as a diuretic, so it is less likely to cause electrolyte imbalances or dehydration.
- In patients with certain kidney conditions, Tekturna can help reduce the risk of kidney damage associated with high blood pressure, particularly in those with diabetic nephropathy.
Direction of Use
- The usual starting dose of Tekturna is 150 mg once daily. The dose may be adjusted based on the patient’s response to treatment, with the typical maximum dose being 300 mg per day.
- Tekturna can be taken with or without food. It should be taken at the same time each day to help remember the dose.
- If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Safety Concerns
- Tekturna may affect kidney function, especially when used in combination with other medications that also influence the renin-angiotensin system, such as ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). Kidney function should be monitored regularly during treatment.
- Tekturna can increase potassium levels in the blood, leading to hyperkalemia, which can be dangerous. Blood potassium levels should be monitored, especially if the patient is taking potassium supplements or other medications that affect potassium balance.
- In patients who are salt-depleted or on a low-salt diet, Tekturna may cause symptomatic hypotension (low blood pressure), especially when starting treatment.
- Tekturna is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as it can harm the fetus. It is also not advised for mothers who are breastfeeding. Alternative treatments should be considered during pregnancy and lactation.
- Although rare, Tekturna may cause angioedema, a serious allergic reaction involving swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat. Seek immediate medical attention if signs of angioedema occur.
- Tekturna may interact with other medications, such as those that affect the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, potassium-sparing diuretics, and potassium supplements. Careful management of these drugs is necessary to avoid adverse effects like hyperkalemia and kidney damage.
Avoid Tekturna (Aliskiren) If
- Tekturna should not be used during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as it can cause harm to the developing fetus, including birth defects and renal failure.
- Tekturna is not recommended for breastfeeding as it is not known if it passes into breast milk and may affect the nursing infant.
- If you have a history of angioedema related to the use of ACE inhibitors or other RAAS inhibitors, Tekturna should be avoided.
- Tekturna should not be used in patients with severe kidney disease or renal artery stenosis due to the increased risk of worsening kidney function.
- Tekturna should not be used together with ACE inhibitors or ARBs in patients with diabetes or those with severe kidney impairment, as the combination may increase the risk of kidney failure, low blood pressure, and hyperkalemia.
- If you have had an allergic reaction to aliskiren or any component of Tekturna, you should avoid using this medication.
