Information about Colchicine

Colchicine is a medication primarily used to treat and prevent gout attacks and certain other inflammatory conditions. It works by reducing inflammation and alleviating pain associated with these conditions.

Product Highlights

  • Treatment of acute gout attacks and prevention of recurrent attacks in patients with gout.
  • Management of symptoms in patients with FMF, a hereditary inflammatory disorder.
  • Occasionally used off-label for conditions like Behçet’s disease and pericarditis, though these uses are less common.

Key Ingredient

  • Colchicine

Key Benefits

  • Provides rapid relief from the pain and inflammation of gout attacks.
  • Helps prevent recurrent gout attacks when used as a long-term treatment.
  • Effective in reducing inflammation associated with Familial Mediterranean Fever and other conditions.

Direction of Use

  • Typically, 1mg at the first sign of a gout attack, followed by 0.5 mg one hour later. The total dose should not exceed 1.5 mg in one hour.
  • Generally, 0.5 mg to 1mg once or twice daily, depending on the individual’s condition and response.

Safety Concerns

  • May involve gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
  • Overdose can lead to severe toxicity, including bone marrow suppression, severe gastrointestinal symptoms, and liver damage. Ongoing monitoring might be required for extended use.
