Prescription Isentress contains raltegravir, a medicine used in combination with other antiretrovirals for the treatment of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Isentress blocks an enzyme called integrase which is required by the virus for reproduction. Isentress slows down the spread of HIV and in combination with other medicine will reduce the amount of HIV in the blood and increase your CD4 levels. Isentress is not a cure for HIV but can help slow down or hold off the damage caused by the HIV virus and the development of diseases and infections associated with AIDS.

Isentress is available as hard tablets of 400mg and 600mg and chewable tablets of 25mg and 100mg as well as packets of oral granules. Chewable Isentress is suitable for children while the granules are used by babies and young children. 

Taking 4 x 100mg chewable Isentress tablets will not give exactly the same effect as taking a 400mg tablet so you must take the strength of Isentress prescribed by your doctor.

The standard adult Isentress dose is 1,200mg taken as 2 x 600mg tablets once per day with or without food. Children will receive lower doses of Isentress based on weight and age. Hard tablets are not to be crushed or split, chewable tablets are chewed and followed with a glass of water.

Do not stop taking Isentress even if you feel better. If you miss a dose of Isentress, take as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose in which case you will just skip the missed dose and continue treatment as usual.
