Prescription Triumeq contains the active ingredients abacavir, dolutegravir and lamivudine for the treatment of HIV. Abacavir and lamivudine are nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI) while dolutegravir is a integrase inhibitor (INI). Triumeq is a not a cure for HIV but it is used to reduce the amount of virus in the body and increase your CD4 blood count.

Triumeq is used by adults and children over 12 years of age (minimum weight of 88 pounds). Triumeq is not used by patients who test positive for a gene called HLA-B*5701.

Triumeq is usually taken as 1 tablet once per day, at the same time each day with or without food. Triumeq must be taken exactly as prescribed without missing doses. If you forget to take a dose and it is almost time for the next dose, skip that dose and take your next dose at the regular scheduled time. Do not take any antacids for 6 hours prior to taking Triumeq or at least 2 hours afterwards.

Information about Triumeq (Abacavir / Dolutegravir / Lamivudine)

Triumeq is a fixed-dose combination tablet containing three different drugs: Abacavir, Dolutegravir, and Lamivudine. These components work together to inhibit the replication of HIV by targeting different stages of the virus’s life cycle. Abacavir and Lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that block reverse transcriptase, an enzyme crucial for HIV replication. Dolutegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that prevents HIV from integrating into the host's DNA.

Product Highlights

  • Triumeq is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 in adults and children over 12 years of age. It is not recommended for individuals who are HIV-negative or those with unknown HIV status.

Key Ingredients

  • Abacavir
  • Dolutegravir
  • Lamivudine:

Key Benefits

  • Triumeq helps to lower the amount of HIV in the blood (viral load) and increase CD4+ cell counts, which are critical for immune function.
  • The once-daily dosing improves patient compliance and simplifies treatment.
  • The combination of drugs targets HIV through different mechanisms, improving efficacy and reducing the likelihood of resistance.
  • Since it combines three drugs into a single tablet, patients don’t have to take multiple medications.

Direction of Use

  • One tablet of Triumeq is taken once daily.
  • It can be taken with or without food. It's important to take the medication at the same time every day.
  • If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible unless it's nearly time for the next dose. Do not take two doses at once.

Safety Concerns

  • Abacavir may trigger a serious allergic reaction that can be life-threatening. It is important to screen for the HLA-B*5701 gene before starting treatment, as those who test positive for this allele are at increased risk for the reaction.
  • Both Abacavir and Lamivudine have been associated with liver toxicity, and caution should be used in patients with liver disease.
  • Dolutegravir has been associated with neuropsychiatric side effects such as insomnia, headache, and irritability in some patients.
  • Caution is recommended for patients with pre-existing kidney conditions.

Avoid Triumeq (Abacavir / Dolutegravir / Lamivudine) If

  • You have a hypersensitivity to Abacavir or a known HLA-B*5701 allele (genetic test positive for this marker).
  • You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without consulting your doctor, as the safety in pregnancy must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • You have severe liver disease, such as cirrhosis, or significant renal dysfunction.
  • You are allergic to any of the components (Abacavir, Dolutegravir, Lamivudine).
