Information about Nasonex (Mometasone)

Nasonex is a brand name for mometasone furoate, a corticosteroid used primarily in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and other inflammatory conditions affecting the nasal passages. It is available as a nasal spray and works by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune response in the nasal tissues, which helps relieve symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and itching. Nasonex is often prescribed for both seasonal and perennial allergies and may also be used to treat nasal polyps. As a corticosteroid, it offers effective long-term management of allergy symptoms, with a relatively low risk of systemic side effects when used as directed.

Product Highlights

  • Nasonex is used to treat both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. It helps relieve common allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itching caused by allergens like pollen, mold, dust mites, and pet dander.
  • Nasonex is effective in treating nasal polyps, which are growths in the nasal passages that can cause congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose.
  • While it is primarily used for allergic rhinitis, Nasonex may also be used for non-allergic rhinitis (vasomotor rhinitis), which causes similar symptoms of nasal congestion and runny nose without an identifiable allergic trigger.
  • It can help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages that contributes to chronic sinusitis.

Key Ingredient

  • Mometasone Furoate

Key Benefits

  • Nasonex effectively reduces inflammation in the nasal passages, offering relief from the common symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose.
  • The once-daily dosing provides continuous relief for up to 24 hours, helping to manage allergy symptoms throughout the day and night.
  • Since Nasonex is administered as a nasal spray, it acts directly at the site of inflammation, minimizing the risk of systemic side effects often seen with oral corticosteroids.
  • Nasonex helps to reduce the size and inflammation of nasal polyps, improving breathing and reducing nasal obstruction.
  • When used as directed, Nasonex has low systemic absorption, meaning it mainly works locally in the nasal passages and has a reduced risk of widespread side effects typically associated with oral steroids.
  • For individuals with persistent nasal allergy symptoms or nasal polyps, Nasonex can significantly improve nasal airflow, leading to better overall comfort and quality of life.

Direction of Use

  • Dosage:
  • Adults and Children 12 Years and Older: The usual dose is 2 sprays per nostril once daily (200 mcg total).
  • Children Aged 2 to 11 Years: The typical dose is 1 spray per nostril once daily (50 mcg total).
  • Shake the bottle well before use. Prime the spray pump before the first use or if the spray has not been used for several days. Insert the spray nozzle into your nostril, tilt your head slightly forward, and spray while inhaling gently through your nose. Do not spray into your eyes or mouth.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects include nasal irritation, burning, dryness, or a sore throat. These side effects are generally mild and usually resolve with ongoing use.
  • Prolonged use of nasal corticosteroids, including Nasonex, may increase the risk of nosebleeds, especially in individuals with dry nasal passages or a history of frequent nosebleeds.
  • Corticosteroids can suppress the immune system, so there may be an increased risk of fungal or bacterial infections in the nasal passages, such as fungal infections (e.g., thrush).
  • Long-term use of nasal corticosteroids may contribute to the development of cataracts or glaucoma in some individuals, particularly those with a family history or other risk factors.
  • There is a small risk of growth suppression in children when using nasal corticosteroids over a long period. Regular monitoring of growth is recommended during extended treatment.
  • While systemic absorption of mometasone is low, long-term or excessive use can potentially lead to systemic corticosteroid side effects, including adrenal suppression, especially if used in higher doses than prescribed.
  • Corticosteroids like Nasonex can suppress adrenal gland function, especially with long-term or high-dose use, leading to potential adrenal insufficiency.
  • Although Nasonex is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding when prescribed by a doctor, it should only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks.

Avoid Nasonex (Mometasone) If

  • Avoid if you are allergic to mometasone furoate or any other ingredients in Nasonex.
  • Do not use Nasonex if you have an active infection in your nasal passages or sinuses, especially fungal, bacterial, or viral infections, as corticosteroids can exacerbate these conditions.
  • If you have had recent nasal surgery or injury, you should avoid using Nasonex unless directed by a doctor, as it may interfere with healing.
  • If you have untreated eye conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts, consult your doctor before using Nasonex, as long-term use of nasal corticosteroids can contribute to these issues.
  • Nasonex should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk. Speak with your healthcare provider for advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid Nasonex if you are immunocompromised or at higher risk of infections, as corticosteroids can suppress immune function.
