Information about Rhinolast (Azelastine)

Rhinolast (Azelastine) is a nasal spray that contains azelastine, an antihistamine used for the relief of symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking histamine, a substance released during allergic reactions that causes symptoms like sneezing, itching, and nasal congestion. Rhinolast provides fast relief for allergy sufferers by targeting the nasal passages where symptoms occur.

Product Highlights

  • Provides relief from symptoms of hay fever, including sneezing, itchy nose, and nasal congestion.
  • Relieves year-round allergy symptoms caused by indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, or mold.
  • Used to treat nasal symptoms that are not related to allergies but cause similar congestion, sneezing, and runny nose.

Key Ingredient

  • Azelastine

Key Benefits

  • Provides quick relief from sneezing, itching, and nasal congestion due to allergies.
  • Offers relief that can last for up to 12 hours, allowing for less frequent dosing.
  • As a second-generation antihistamine, azelastine typically does not cause drowsiness, making it suitable for daytime use.
  • Specifically designed to treat nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis directly in the nasal passages, providing more effective localized relief.

Direction of Use

  • Typically, 1 or 2 sprays in each nostril once or twice daily, depending on the severity of symptoms and doctor's instructions.
  • Shake the bottle well before each use. Prime the spray pump if using for the first time or if the bottle hasn’t been used in a while.
  • Insert the nozzle into the nostril, close the other nostril, and spray while inhaling gently through the nose. Refrain from blowing your nose immediately after use to ensure the medication works effectively.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects may include mild irritation in the nose, such as dryness, burning, or a bitter taste.
  • While non-sedating, some individuals may experience mild drowsiness or dizziness, especially at higher doses.
  • Headaches may occur as a potential side effect in some users.
  • Prolonged use may cause dryness or irritation, leading to nosebleeds.
  • While there is limited information on its safety during pregnancy, Rhinolast should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Azelastine is excreted in breast milk, so use with caution during breastfeeding.

Avoid Rhinolast (Azelastine) If

  • Avoid if you have a known allergy to azelastine or any of the inactive ingredients in the formulation.
  • Use with caution in patients with severe liver or kidney disease, as the drug may not be metabolized or cleared effectively.
  • Rhinolast should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
  • Rhinolast is not recommended for children under 6 years of age unless advised by a healthcare professional.
