Information About Advair HFA

Advair HFA inhaler, which contains the active ingredients Fluticasone (a corticosteroid) and Salmeterol (a long-acting beta agonist), is primarily used for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

This drug is supplied in a metered dose inhaler, which is a plastic container with a mouthpiece and a pressurized medicine canister.

It is prescribed for long-term management rather than for immediate relief of acute symptoms. Short-acting inhalers (such as albuterol) are typically used for quick relief during asthma attacks.

Product Highlights

  • By combining a corticosteroid (Fluticasone) and a long-acting beta agonist (Salmeterol), Advair HFA addresses both the inflammation of the airways and the relaxation of the muscles around the airways, offering comprehensive treatment.
  • It is also used for the maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Key Ingredients

  • Fluticasone propionate
  • Salmeterol xinafoate
  • Propellant HFA-134a

Key Benefits

  • Advair HFA helps in controlling symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness associated with asthma and COPD.
  • The medication can improve lung function and reduce the frequency of exacerbations in patients with asthma and COPD.

Direction For Use

  • Remove the cap from the mouthpiece. Shake the inhaler well for about 5 seconds before each use. This ensures that the medication is properly mixed.
  • Breathe out fully away from the inhaler to empty your lungs as much as possible.
  • Hold the inhaler upright with the mouthpiece facing you, and with your thumb on the base below the mouthpiece.
  • Seal your lips tightly around the mouthpiece to ensure a proper seal.
  • Continue to breathe in deeply and steadily. This helps to ensure that the medication reaches your lungs rather than just your mouth and throat.
  • Hold your breath for about 10 seconds, or for as long as is comfortable, to allow the medication to settle in your airways.
  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use. This helps reduce the risk of developing oral thrush (yeast infection in the mouth) which can be a side effect of inhaled corticosteroids.

Safety Concern

  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use.
  • Put the cap back on the inhaler to protect it from dust and debris.
  • Clean the mouthpiece of the inhaler at least once a week with a dry tissue or cloth. Avoid getting water into the inhaler as it may affect the medication.
  • Use regularly as prescribed, even if you feel well. It is a maintenance medication and works best when used consistently.
  • Follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding the frequency and dosage of Advair HFA.
  • Keep track of how many doses you have used so you know when to get a refill.

Avoid Taking if Advair HFA :

  • The medicine has expired as it may not work if taken after the expiry date.
  • When the counter reads 000, you should not keep using the inhaler, because you will not receive the right amount of medicine.
