Information about Estring (Estradiol)

Estring is a low-dose vaginal ring that releases estradiol, a form of estrogen, over a period of time. It's primarily used to treat symptoms of menopause, particularly vaginal dryness and discomfort. The estradiol in Estring is absorbed locally through the vaginal wall, providing direct relief to the affected area with minimal systemic absorption.

Product Highlights

  • Estring is indicated for the relief of moderate to severe symptoms of vaginal atrophy, which occurs during menopause. Symptoms include vaginal dryness, irritation, burning, and painful intercourse (dyspareunia).
  • It's used in postmenopausal women who have not had a hysterectomy and who require estrogen therapy for vaginal symptoms.

Key Ingredient

  • Estradiol

Key Benefits

  • Provides direct relief to vaginal tissues with minimal systemic hormone absorption.
  • The ring is worn for 90 days, requiring less frequent replacement than other vaginal estrogen treatments like creams or tablets.
  • Estring can help restore vaginal moisture, elasticity, and overall health, reducing discomfort during intercourse.
  • Because the estradiol is absorbed locally, the risk of systemic side effects, such as breast tenderness or blood clot formation, is lower compared to oral hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Direction of Use

  • The Estring ring is inserted into the vagina by the patient. It's placed high in the vagina, much like a tampon, and should remain there for continuous release of estradiol.
  • The ring is designed to be worn for 90 days, after which it should be removed and replaced with a new ring.
  • No need for daily attention—once in place, the ring will gradually release estradiol over the 90-day period.

Safety Concerns

  • As with any estrogen therapy, there are risks associated with its use, including an increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and certain types of cancer, particularly breast and endometrial cancers.
  • Some users may experience irritation or infection in the vaginal area.
  • Though minimal, estradiol does enter the bloodstream. In rare cases, some individuals may experience systemic side effects like breast tenderness, headaches, or mood changes.

Avoid Estring (Estradiol) If

  • Estring is contraindicated in pregnancy, as it may harm a developing fetus.
  • If you have or have had a history of breast cancer, you should not use Estring.
  • Those with a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), or other clotting disorders should avoid Estring, as estrogen therapy can increase the risk of blood clots.
  • If you have abnormal vaginal bleeding that has not been diagnosed, you should avoid using Estring until a healthcare provider has determined the cause.
  • Individuals with severe liver disease should avoid estrogen therapy due to the potential for liver dysfunction.
  • If you are allergic to estradiol or any of the ingredients in the Estring product, you should not use it.
