Information about Nexium granules (Esomeprazole)

Nexium Granules is a formulation of esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid. Nexium granules are typically used in situations where a liquid or suspension form of the medication is preferred or when a person has difficulty swallowing tablets. This form is often used in pediatric patients or for individuals who require an alternative to oral tablets.

Product Highlights

  • Nexium granules are indicated for the treatment of the following acid-related conditions:
  • For the healing of erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) caused by GERD and for the maintenance of healed esophagus in GERD patients.
  • Used to treat and promote healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers, including ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, often as part of a combination therapy.
  • A rare condition involving excessive stomach acid production, for which Nexium helps control acid secretion.
  • In combination with antibiotics, Nexium is used to eradicate H. pylori bacteria and help prevent the recurrence of ulcers.
  • Nexium may be used in patients who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) long-term to prevent the development of ulcers.

Key Ingredient

  • Esomeprazole

Key Benefits

  • Nexium granules provide effective and sustained reduction in stomach acid, helping to alleviate symptoms of GERD and promoting healing of ulcers.
  • The granule form is particularly useful for pediatric patients who cannot swallow tablets or for adults who prefer a liquid form.
  • Nexium is effective in preventing the formation of ulcers, particularly in patients taking NSAIDs or those with H. pylori infections.
  • By reducing acid production, Nexium helps heal the damage caused to the esophagus by acid reflux (erosive esophagitis).
  • Nexium has a long duration of action, providing continuous acid suppression throughout the day with a once-daily dose.

Direction of Use

  • Nexium granules should be mixed with water to form a suspension before taking.
  • Open the packet of granules and mix the contents with a small amount of water (usually 1 tablespoon for children or more for adults).
  • Stir the mixture and drink it immediately. It should not be saved for future use.
  • Generally taken once daily, preferably in the morning, at least 1 hour before eating. Adhere to your healthcare provider's instructions for the correct dosage and treatment duration.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
  • The dosing will depend on the child’s weight and age, as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Safety Concerns

  • Prolonged use of Nexium may increase the risk of kidney problems, including acute interstitial nephritis and chronic kidney disease. Kidney function should be regularly assessed during prolonged use.
  • Long-term use of PPIs like Nexium can lead to low magnesium levels, which can cause muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, or seizures.
  • Prolonged use of PPIs may increase the risk of bone fractures, particularly in the hip, wrist, or spine. Sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake may be advised.
  • Use of PPIs can increase the risk of infections, such as Clostridium difficile in the colon, especially in hospitalized patients.
  • Stopping Nexium abruptly, especially after prolonged use, may cause a rebound increase in stomach acid production. Tapering the dosage under a doctor’s supervision is recommended if discontinuing.

Avoid Nexium Granules (Esomeprazole) If

  • Avoid using Nexium if you have a known allergy to esomeprazole, omeprazole, or any other ingredients in the medication.
  • Nexium should be used with caution or avoided in patients with severe liver impairment (liver failure or cirrhosis), as it is metabolized by the liver.
  • Patients with an active Clostridium difficile infection or those at risk for it should avoid Nexium, as PPIs can increase the severity of the infection.
  • Nexium is classified as a Category C medication for pregnancy, meaning it should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is not recommended for breastfeeding, as it can pass into breast milk.
  • Avoid using Nexium with medications that interact with proton pump inhibitors, such as rilpivirine (an HIV drug), as this can decrease the effectiveness of either medication.
