Information about Nitrolingual Spray (Nitroglycerin)

Nitrolingual Spray is a fast-acting nitroglycerin formulation used for the relief and prevention of angina (chest pain) associated with coronary artery disease. It is administered as an oral spray that delivers nitroglycerin directly to the bloodstream through the mucous membranes of the mouth, providing rapid relief of acute chest pain. Nitroglycerin works by relaxing the blood vessels, allowing for improved blood flow to the heart, which helps reduce the workload on the heart and alleviates chest pain.

Product Highlights

  • Nitrolingual Spray is primarily used to treat acute episodes of angina (chest pain) in patients with coronary artery disease.
  • It may also be used to prevent angina attacks in certain situations, such as before physical activity or stress that could trigger chest pain.
  • Ideal for patients who experience sudden chest pain or discomfort, helping them manage symptoms quickly.

Key Ingredient

  • Nitroglycerin

Key Benefits

  • Provides fast relief of angina symptoms, typically within 1–2 minutes of use.
  • The spray format makes it easy to carry and use in emergency situations, providing fast relief without the need for water or swallowing pills.
  • The spray is administered under the tongue or inside the cheek, ensuring quick absorption and effectiveness.
  • Ideal for patients who experience sudden, severe chest pain or discomfort due to angina.

Direction of Use

Administration:

  • Shake the canister well before use.
  • Spray 1–2 sprays under the tongue (sublingually) or inside the cheek.
  • Avoid swallowing or inhaling the spray.
  • Repeat up to two additional sprays, 5 minutes apart, if chest pain persists. If symptoms are not relieved after 3 sprays, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
  • Do not exceed 3 sprays in 15 minutes.
  • Store at room temperature and keep the canister away from heat or open flame. Do not expose the canister to direct heat or fire.

Safety Concerns

  • A common side effect of nitroglycerin due to the dilation of blood vessels. This may subside with continued use.
  • Nitroglycerin can lower blood pressure, which may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, especially when standing up quickly (orthostatic hypotension).
  • Some patients may experience a feeling of warmth or redness in the face or neck.
  • Overuse of nitroglycerin can lead to tolerance, reducing its effectiveness. It is important to use it only as prescribed and to avoid frequent use.
  • Nitroglycerin may interact with other medications, especially those used to treat erectile dysfunction (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil), as these can cause severe hypotension when combined with nitroglycerin.

Avoid Nitrolingual Spray (Nitroglycerin) If

  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to nitroglycerin, nitrates, or any component of the spray.
  • Avoid use if you have severe low blood pressure (hypotension), as nitroglycerin may lower blood pressure further.
  • Do not use if you are taking PDE-5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) for erectile dysfunction, as this can cause a severe drop in blood pressure.
  • Avoid use in patients with severe anemia, as nitroglycerin can further reduce oxygen delivery to tissues.
  • Use cautiously in patients with conditions that increase intracranial pressure, such as head injury or hemorrhage, because nitroglycerin can potentially worsen these conditions.
  • If you’ve recently had a heart attack, consult your doctor before using nitroglycerin, as its use may need to be closely monitored.
