Information about Xenical (Orlistat)

Xenical is a prescription medication used primarily to aid in weight loss or help maintain weight loss in individuals who are overweight or obese. It works by inhibiting the action of enzymes that break down fats in the diet. As a result, some of the fat you eat is not absorbed by your body and is instead passed out through your stool.

Product Highlights

  • Xenical is prescribed to help with weight loss in people who are overweight (with a body mass index [BMI] of 30 or greater) or obese (with a BMI of 27 or greater and associated health conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol).
  • After initial weight loss, it helps prevent the regain of lost weight when combined with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet.

Key Ingredient

  • Orlistat

Key Benefits

  • Helps reduce the amount of fat absorbed from your diet, promoting weight loss when combined with a calorie-controlled diet and exercise plan.
  • Supports weight maintenance after initial weight loss.
  • By promoting weight loss, Xenical may help lower high blood pressure, cholesterol, and other cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Xenical may help improve blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes when used as part of a comprehensive weight loss plan.

Direction of Use

  • Typically, 120 mg taken three times a day with each of the three main meals that contain fat.
  • Swallow the capsules whole with water during or up to one hour after a meal. If you miss a meal or the meal contains no fat, you can skip the dose.
  • It is crucial to follow a low-fat diet (less than 30% of total calories from fat) to minimize side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort.

Safety Concerns

  • Common side effects include oily stools, frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, and flatulence. These side effects are typically more pronounced if a high-fat meal is consumed.
  • Since Orlistat reduces fat absorption, long-term use can lead to deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and beta-carotene. Supplementation of these vitamins may be necessary.
  • Rare reports of liver damage have been associated with Orlistat, though the risk is low. It is important to monitor liver function during treatment, particularly if any symptoms of liver problems (e.g., jaundice, dark urine, upper stomach pain) occur.
  • There is a possibility of kidney stone formation in some individuals, so monitoring renal function may be required.

Avoid Xenical (Orlistat) If

  • Orlistat is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding as its effects on the fetus or infant are not well-studied.
  • Individuals with severe liver impairment should avoid using Xenical.
  • People with conditions such as cholestasis or other malabsorption syndromes should not use Xenical.
  • If you are allergic to Orlistat or any of its components, you should not use Xenical.
  • If you have gallbladder problems, pancreatitis, or active gastrointestinal diseases (such as Crohn’s disease), it may not be safe to take Xenical.
