Information about Sensipar (Cinacalcet)

Sensipar (Cinacalcet) is a prescription medication primarily used to treat conditions related to calcium imbalance in the body, including primary hyperparathyroidism, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and parathyroid cancer. It works by regulating calcium levels in the blood, helping to restore balance in patients with disrupted calcium metabolism.

Product Highlights

  • Management of secondary hyperparathyroidism in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing dialysis.
  • For the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism when surgery is not an option.
  • Treatment of hypercalcemia (high calcium levels) associated with parathyroid cancer.

Key Ingredient

  • Cinacalcet

Key Benefits

  • Sensipar lowers elevated levels of PTH, which can help prevent bone disease and other complications of hyperparathyroidism.
  • Used to control elevated calcium levels in patients with parathyroid cancer.
  • Especially helpful in managing calcium levels in patients with kidney disease undergoing dialysis.
  • By managing PTH and calcium levels, it helps prevent bone damage associated with hyperparathyroidism.

Direction of Use

  • Sensipar should be taken orally with food to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset.
  • The typical starting dose is 30 mg daily, with adjustments based on the patient's calcium and PTH levels. Dosage may increase or decrease as directed by a healthcare provider.
  • It's important to take Sensipar consistently at the same time each day, as instructed by a healthcare professional.

Safety Concerns

  • One of the most serious side effects, where blood calcium levels may drop too low. Signs of hypocalcemia may include muscle cramps, spasms, and tingling or numbness.
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are common side effects, especially when first starting the medication.
  • Signs include swelling, rash, or difficulty breathing. Seek emergency medical help if any severe allergic reactions occur.
  • Cinacalcet can cause changes in heart rhythm, which may be more prominent in people with existing heart conditions.

Avoid Sensipar (Cinacalcet) If

  • Do not use Sensipar if you have low blood calcium levels, as it can worsen the condition.
  • If you have severe liver impairment, cinacalcet should be avoided or used with caution.
  • If you are allergic to cinacalcet or any of the inactive components in Sensipar.
  • Cinacalcet is not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, and it is not known if it passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding should be avoided while taking this drug.
  • While Sensipar is commonly used for kidney disease patients, it may require dose adjustment or monitoring in those with certain kidney conditions.
