Prescription Eliquis contains apixaban which blocks Factor Xa, which works in the blood clotting process. 

Eliquis is used by adults to prevent the formation of blood clots in the heart in patients with atrial fibrillation with one or more risk factor. Eliquis treats these blood clots as they are dangerous as they can break off from blood vessels and travel to the brain, leading to stroke or cause embolism in other organs. Eliquis is also used to prevent blood clots and to treat blood clots in legs and lungs.

Eliquis is taken two times per day with or without food exactly as prescribed by the doctor. If you are scheduled for any medical procedure or surgery, you may need to stop taking Eliquis prior to the surgery.

Although doses may vary considerably, usually Eliquis is began at a dose of 10mg twice daily for 7 days, after which the dose is decreased to 5mg twice daily. After 6 months of treatment, the dose is often decreased to 2.5mg twice daily for treatment of DVT or PE.
