Information about Xalatan Eye Drops (Latanoprost)

Xalatan contains latanoprost, a prostaglandin analogue that helps lower intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of fluid (aqueous humor) from the eye. This is essential in preventing vision loss in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Product Highlights

  • Xalatan is used to lower elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma.
  • It is also used to treat elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension, to prevent the progression to glaucoma.

Key Ingredient

  • Latanoprost

Key Benefits

  • Latanoprost effectively lowers intraocular pressure, reducing the risk of optic nerve damage associated with glaucoma.
  • It is typically used once daily, which helps with adherence to the treatment regimen.
  • By increasing fluid drainage from the eye, it helps maintain normal IOP levels.
  • Xalatan is generally well-tolerated by most patients and provides consistent IOP-lowering effects.

Direction of Use

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before using Xalatan. Shake the bottle if necessary (check your prescription label).
  • Tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower eyelid to form a small pocket. Hold the bottle upside down and place a drop into the pocket of the lower eyelid. Do not allow the tip of the dropper to contact any surface, including your eye.
  • After instilling the drop, close your eye gently and apply gentle pressure to the inner corner of your eye (near the nose) for about 1 minute. This helps to reduce the systemic absorption of the medication.
  • If prescribed for both eyes, repeat the process for the other eye.
  • After use, wipe the tip of the dropper with a clean tissue and replace the cap securely.
  • Xalatan is usually prescribed to be used once daily in the evening.

Safety Concerns

  • Possible side effects include eye redness, eye irritation, changes in the color of the iris (the colored part of the eye), and eyelash growth.
  • Latanoprost may cause increased pigmentation of the iris, leading to a gradual change in eye color, typically in brown-eyed individuals.
  • Increased growth, length, and darkening of eyelashes may occur.
  • While systemic absorption is minimal, it is important to avoid excessive use to reduce the risk of systemic side effects, such as headaches or changes in blood pressure.
  • Though rare, some people may experience allergic reactions, including itching, swelling, or a rash around the eyes.

Avoid Xalatan Eye Drops (Latanoprost) If

  • If you are allergic to latanoprost or any other ingredients in Xalatan, you should avoid using it.
  • If you have an active eye infection or inflammation in the eye, avoid using Xalatan until the infection is resolved.
  • Consult your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as latanoprost should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary.
  • If you have any history of serious eye conditions, such as uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye), talk to your doctor before using Xalatan.
